This year’s musical “The Pirate Queen” is based on on the life and adventures of the 16th century Irish chieftain and pirate Gráinne O’Malley, who was one of the last Irish clan leaders to resist the English conquest of Gaelic Ireland. The story is a swashbuckling affair that sees Grace progress from stubborn teen to spectacular Queen through a trail of passion, heartbreak and adventure. As her story unfolds we travel with her from the wilds of Ireland’s West across the surging Atlantic to the hazards of the English court. We see her grow through her love for her father, her passion for the warrior Tiernan, her fierce loyalty to her clan and her hatred and respect for the English Queen. The personalities are larger than life, the action is non-stop, the waves are big and the ballads are huge!
Our annual musical is a culmination of many hours of hard work and team effort undertaken by staff, students, parents/guardians and the whole school community. The privilege of coordinating the planning and production of this musical lies with the 2017-2018 Transition Year group.
The acting, singing, music, costumes and spectacular sets – all are the work of students, as are the posters, artwork, ticket sales and budgeting. The Music, Art, Drama and IT departments have all contributed to the multi- faceted, multi-talented show that is “The Pirate Queen”.
I congratulate the cast and all those both on and off stage, who are the stars of the show. I pay particular tribute to our musical director Ms. Gemma Magner and to our stage director Ms. Carolyn O’ Flaherty for the time, work and encouragement they have contributed to this wonderful show.
To our loyal sponsors and to all who assist with stewarding, make-up, costumes, music, sound and lighting, we are truly grateful. To the teachers, senior prefects, caretaking and secretarial staff, Parents’ Association, Board of Management, Bandon Gardaí and all who co-operated in the smooth running of all the performances your contribution is beyond measure. To the parents/guardians who supported the students in any way a sincere thank you.
Many thanks to all involved.
Finally, to our audiences, your support is much appreciated.
